Safety in the bike park

Mountain biking is an activity that is associated with a certain risk of injury. At Hafjell Bike Park, we place great emphasis on safety work so that you as a guest with us will have a safe and good experience with us.

Mountain biking is a broad term that encompasses everything from downhill biking to cycling to school on a gravel road, so it is up to each individual to make a risk assessment adapted to their skill level, for the cycling they are going to do.

We define our bike park as all the trails that are within the alpine center, i.e. the trails that are marked and signposted as downhill trails on our TRAIL MAPS, and we have our own guidelines and rules for cycling in our park. For cycling outside our facility, we encourage you to follow NOTS's stiffening rules, which can be found at the bottom of this page.

Bicycle patrol

Hafjell Bike Park always has a dedicated bicycle patrol available during the facility's opening hours, ready to be able to help if an accident should occur. Our bicycle patrols are skilled professionals who work every day for your and our safety.

The phone number for the bicycle patrol is +47 40 40 15 00, you may want to save it on your phone when you read this, so you have it available if you should need it.

For your own safety, please familiarize yourself with the following guidelines:

Cycling rules in Hafjell Bike Park

1. ALL CYCLING IS AT YOUR OWN RISK

2. GET TO KNOW EACH OTHER Get to know the equipment and trail first, always take it easy the first trip so you don't get any unpleasant surprises

3. ADAPT YOUR SPEED So you don't put yourself or others at risk, depending on your skill, the road conditions and the difficulty of the course.

4. DUTY TO GIVE WAY Cyclists coming from behind are responsible for avoiding collisions, overtaking on trails is not allowed.

5. CROSS CAREFULLY When driving into, or crossing a trail

6. DO NOT STOP ON THE TRAIL Never stop under hanging edges, jumps or other unclear places. Cyclists on foot on the way up must always stay off the trail.

7. CHECK THE EQUIPMENT The bike must be in good condition. Always check that the brakes, dampers and wheels are in good condition.

8. RESPECT SIGNS Follow signs, markings and instructions. Reckless driving may result in confiscated lift passes.

9. MANDATORY HELMET Full face helmet is highly recommended. Other safety equipment is recommended.

10. HELP IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENT In the event of injury, everyone has a duty to help. Witnesses and participants are obliged to provide personal information.

11. AVOID UNNECESSARY WEAR Avoid locking the rear wheel when cornering and steep hills, as it puts unnecessary strain on both bikes and trails.

Rules for the use of pump tracks

  • HELMET is always mandatory in the pump track, no matter what equipment you are travelling on.
  • Keep your eyes open and look carefully to avoid a collision.
  • The pump track is not directional, if you meet others, slow down and keep to the right.
  • Bicycles have priority in the pump track, skateboards, scooters and other equipment without brakes should not be used when there are others in the pump track.
  • Running and other games in the pump track are not allowed when people are cycling there.

Other rules and guidelines

  • Cycling on our downhill trails is not recommended for children under 8 years old
  • Cycling on our downhill trails with small children on a fixed bike seat is not allowed.
  • Loose dogs in the facility are not allowed, leash also applies with us.
  • We do not want to see abandoned, tethered dogs near our common areas. Not pleasant for your dog, and from experience it can lead to nuisance for our other guests.

Bikes & Equipment

In our lift-based cycling facility, we only recommend the use of full-suspension mountain bikes with good disc brakes. For pump track cycling and trail cycling, of course, all other types of bikes can be used. Our rental bikes within each category are of top standard from Scott, helmet and protective gear are always included in our rental prices.

"Regular" mountain bikes, children's bikes, and the like are not recommended on the facility's downhill trails.

By the way, we recommend the use of the following equipment when cycling in Hafjell Bike Park:

  • HELMET is always mandatory on all our trails, FULL HELMET is mandatory on red and black trails.
  • Back plate
  • Elbow Pads
  • Knee pads
  • Gloves
  • Goggles/Goggles

Trail grading lift-based cycling

Our cycling trails within the lift facility are defined as downhill trails

● Green trails are suitable for all skill levels. We recommend all beginners to start by cycling on a green trail before switching to blue. On green trails, you won't encounter any scary obstacles, but can roll easily on wide machine-built paths or gravel roads.

 ● Blue trails are a little more difficult than the green ones, but are also manageable for beginners. Our blue trails are wide, machine-built trails with comfortable dosages, small plateau jumps and other fun elements.

 ● Red trails are narrower and/or steeper than the blue trails, and are suitable for more experienced cyclists. Here you will find more rocks and roots, as well as bigger challenges such as jumps and drops of a slightly greater difficulty than what you find in blue slopes.

  ● Black trails are very demanding, and should only be ridden by those who have very good cycling skills. Here you will find large rocks, roots, large jumps with gaps, drops, technical challenges and very steep descents.

NOTS Rigid Rules

When cycling on trails other than our downhill trails, we advise you to follow the Norwegian Organization for Mountain Biking's guidelines:

  1. Be thoughtful and pleasant when meeting hikers.
  2. You always have a duty to give way to pedestrians.
  3. Limit your speed so that you are not a danger or inconvenience to others, especially along roads and paths that invite high speed, or in unclear sections.
  4. Slow down to walking speed well before passing others on a narrow path.
  5. Do not make new tracks, if you do not have the skills to overcome an obstacle, get off the bike.
  6. Avoid riding on particularly vulnerable trails just after periods of heavy rainfall.
  7. Don't make the trail wider by riding around puddles or obstacles.
  8. Carry the bike through marshy areas so that deep ruts do not form.
  9. Do not lock the rear wheel on steep downhill slopes.
  10. If two cyclists meet on a hill, the one cycling uphill has the right of way.
